Capability-driven recursive self-improvement evolves specialized multimodal agent modules

The Trinity framework organizes diverse multimodal tasks by shared capabilities, evolving reusable Harness modules through recursive self-improvement and capability-aware routing, improving performance by up to 34 points on training and 26 points on unseen benchmarks, including real-world embodied tasks.

Challenges in scaling multimodal agent self-improvement

Multimodal agents must handle diverse tasks involving perception, reasoning, and action across modalities like text, images, and embodied environments. Scaling their capabilities requires evolving both the environments they train in and the agent’s internal control structures, called Harnesses, which coordinate model modules.

Manual construction of heterogeneous, verifiable environments is costly, and manual iteration of Harnesses cannot keep pace with growing task diversity and complexity. Existing recursive self-improvement (RSI) methods focus on text tasks and task-specific evolution, which limits generalization across heterogeneous tasks.

A key insight is that tasks with different modalities and surface forms often share underlying capability requirements, such as perception or state tracking. Grouping tasks by these shared capabilities enables a common learning objective and better generalization, motivating a capability-driven approach to RSI and Harness evolution.
