TraceTrial-Bench evaluates AI agent harness reliability separately from model performance

TraceTrial-Bench benchmarks AI agent harnesses by assessing seven reliability components through 95 tasks, separating agent task success from harness reliability, and enabling failure attribution across 4 harnesses, 9 models, and 3,420 runs.

Challenges in evaluating AI agent harness reliability separately from model behavior

Modern AI agents combine large language models with harnesses that manage interactions with tools, environments, and execution controls. The harness determines what information the model receives, which actions it can take, and how results are handled, making it a critical component for agent reliability.

Existing benchmarks mostly measure overall task success or model capabilities, which conflate model errors with harness failures. This makes it difficult to identify whether failures arise from the model's decisions or from the harness's management of context, execution, or safety.

To improve reliability analysis, it is necessary to evaluate harness mechanisms explicitly, requiring tasks that exercise harness obligations, evidence that reveals whether those obligations were met, and separate assessments of harness behavior and agent outcomes.
