GPT-6-Astra shows broad robotic skills but faces real-world deployment challenges

GPT-6-Astra achieves state-of-the-art results on 12 robotic benchmarks using in-context learning and extended interaction, but real-world tests reveal costly demonstrations, physical constraints, and the need for new benchmarks reflecting practical embodied intelligence.

Challenges in achieving general embodied intelligence with robots

Robotic manipulation and navigation have traditionally relied on specialized models tailored to specific tasks and robot embodiments, limiting generalization across diverse settings. Achieving embodied intelligence—where a single model can perform a wide range of tasks across different robots—requires overcoming challenges in perception, control, and long-horizon planning.

Large-scale language models like GPT-6-Astra offer new potential by integrating multimodal reasoning, in-context learning, and failure recovery. However, measuring their true embodied competence demands evaluation across varied benchmarks and real-world platforms, considering both task success and practical constraints such as execution time and safety.

Existing benchmarks often provide demonstrations and fixed step budgets, which do not reflect real-world deployment where demonstrations may be unavailable and physical constraints limit retrying. Understanding GPT-6-Astra’s capabilities and limitations requires probing these conditions and rethinking benchmark design.
