RealCompanion benchmarks AI understanding of real long-term human conversations

RealCompanion releases ten real AI-human conversations spanning up to 120 days, with detailed annotations linking replies to past messages. It reveals that memory use is rare but often requires distant context, and current AI systems struggle to detect when to recall past information.

Challenges in evaluating AI understanding of long-term human companions

AI companions that interact with people over months must understand who the person is and when past conversation matters for current replies. This requires tracking evolving personal traits and context over long periods.

Existing benchmarks use synthetic or scripted conversations with predefined personas and questions, which do not reflect real-world usage where memory needs are sparse and context evolves naturally.

Testing AI understanding on real conversations is hard because such data is private and complex, and requires detailed annotation linking replies to relevant past messages and inferred persona traits.
