MotorMind enables zero-shot robot manipulation using general vision-language models
MotorMind uses a frozen general-purpose vision-language model to generate mid-level robot actions, with asynchronous monitoring and feedback, achieving 66.7% success on LIBERO-PRO and 95% on a real robot without task-specific training.

Challenges in zero-shot robotic manipulation with vision-language models
Robotic manipulation requires mapping visual observations and language instructions to precise robot actions, but existing vision-language-action (VLA) models struggle to generalize zero-shot to new tasks and environments without additional training or adaptation.
Recent agentic robotic systems use general-purpose vision-language models (VLMs) for high-level reasoning but rely heavily on external learned action policies, segmentation models, or motion planners, adding complexity and limiting direct benefit from advances in VLMs.
The core challenge is whether a general-purpose VLM alone can directly operate a robot by reasoning from observations, issuing actions, and adapting to feedback, without external learned experts or grounding tools, enabling simpler, more general zero-shot manipulation.
