Transformer replaces recurrence with multi-head self-attention for faster, better translation
The Transformer model uses only attention mechanisms, no recurrence or convolution, achieving state-of-the-art BLEU scores on WMT 2014 English-German (28.4) and English-French (41.8) tasks with significantly less training time and cost.

Challenges in sequence transduction and limitations of recurrent models
Sequence transduction tasks like machine translation require mapping input sequences to output sequences, traditionally handled by recurrent neural networks (RNNs) such as LSTMs or gated RNNs. These models process sequences step-by-step, which limits parallelization and slows training, especially for long sequences.
Attention mechanisms have improved sequence models by allowing dependencies to be modeled regardless of distance, but prior work combined attention with recurrence, retaining sequential bottlenecks.
Convolutional models reduce sequential operations but still require multiple layers to capture long-range dependencies, increasing path length and computational cost. The Transformer aims to overcome these limitations by relying solely on attention mechanisms, eliminating recurrence and convolution.
